HOW TO OBTAIN YOUR SECURITY GUARD EMPLOYEE REGISTRATION (Guard Card)

HRS = Hawaii Revised Statutes         HCJDC = Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center

HAR = Hawaii Administrative Rules        DCCA = Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs         BOARD = Board of Private Detectives and Guards

STEP 1. COMPLETE THE TRANSCEND INC. 8-HOUR CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION ($150.00) Please note that due to the virus situation all classes are now held online.  Click here for online class requirements and rules.

The law requires applicants to successfully complete eight (8) hours of classroom instruction and pass a written test conducted by a Board approved provider. Transcend Inc. is Hawaii’s premier provider of Board Approved Security Guard Instruction. We include detailed information on the registration process. After successful completion of the classroom instruction and test, Transcend Inc. will issue a Certificate of Instruction approved by the State of Hawaii for to apply for the GDE license (“guard card”). We’ve lowered our class fee to $150.00.

STEP 2. FINGERPRINTS BASED CRIMINAL CONVICTION HISTORY CHECK ($50.00-$65.00)

A fingerprint based criminal conviction check is required. This done by a company called “Fieldprint”.  Fieldprint will charge their current fees, which may change from time to time,  for their service and the background checks. The fingerprint collection sites do not take walk-ins or accept payment on-site, you must make an appointment and pay the fingerprint fee on-line in advance. To make a fingerprinting appointment go to www.Fieldprinthawaii.com. Once fingerprinted you do not have to wait for the results, the information is sent to the State of Hawaii.  Fieldprint sets their own fees which generally range from about $50.00 to $65.00.

STEP 3. SUBMIT A GUARD EMPLOYEE REGISTRATION APPLICATION & FEES (Currently $81.00)

The final step is to submit a Guard Employee Registration application to the Board. The preferred way is to submit it online (see information under the Helpful Info tab). The paper form can be printed out and submitted. The following is needed along with the form; make sure that all names on all documents in the application package match:

1. Complete the GDE form, making sure to answer all questions.  If you answer “Yes” to question #3 and/or #6 you must include the required information as noted on the form.
2. Upload with the application (or submit with paper form) a copy of the Transcend Inc. Certificate of Instruction. If needed, additional documentation in response to question #3 and/or #6.
3. Pay the fees in effect at the time of application (currently $81.00).

After successful processing the DCCA will issue a GDE Registration Number (guard card), usually within 15-20 business days.
